چکیده

Background: Cell block preparations act as a useful adjunct to smear cytology for categorization of malignant and benign effusions. Plasma thromboplastin cell block technique is simple, requires less time and offers improved cytomorphological features. Aim: To study the utility of Thromboplastin-plasma cell block technique and its diagnostic significance in conjunction with conventional cytology smears in evaluation of serous effusions. Material and methods: One hundred samples were included in the study. In addition to preparation of conventional smears, fluids were subjected to cell block technique. Cell blocks were prepared using Plasma thromboplastin cell block technique. Results: Cellularity and diagnostic yield for malignancy was increased by cell block preparation. Conclusion: Plasma Thromboplastin cell block method provides high cellularity, better architectural patterns and good preservation of cellular and nuclear details, thereby, increasing diagnostic yield in the cytological evaluation of serous effusions when compared to conventional smears alone. Moreover, it is easier to apply immunomarkers and perform molecular studies on the cell blocks that can be stored indefinitely for future testing. Thus, cell blocks can act as a useful adjunct to the conventional cytosmears for evaluation of serous effusions.

Pleural fluid cytology in suspected malignant effusions with special emphasis on cell block preparation

Background: Cytlogical examinations of serous effusions have been well accepted and a positive diagnosis often considered as definitive diagnosis. It helps for staging and prognosis of the patients for malignancy. Accurately diagnosing cells as being either malignant or benign reactive mesothelial cells in serous effusions is a common diagnostic problem in conventional cytological smears (CS). ...

Analysis of Diagnostic Value of Cytological Smear Method Versus Cell Block Method in Body Fluid Cytology: Study of 150 Cases

BACKGROUND Aspiration of serous cavities is a simple and relatively non-invasive technique to achieve diagnosis. Cytologic evaluation of body cavity fluid is diagnostically challenging. METHODS A total of 150 fluid specimens were examined for conventional cytological smear (CS) and cell block method (CB). Out of 150 fluids, 79 were pleural fluid, 69 were ascitic fluid and 2 pericardial fluid....

Cytological Analysis of Body Fluids in Conventional Smear and Cell Block Technique-study of 120 Cases

The cytological study of body fluids is an important diagnostic modality. It helps in finding out the etiology as well as the prognosis of the disease process. In our study, a total of 120 fluid samples were examined for conventional cytological smear and cellblock method. Out of 120 fluids, 58 were peritoneal fluid, 55 were pleural fluid, 4 were synovial and 3 pericardial fluid. Overall morpho...

Comparative Evaluation of Cell Block Method and Smear Cytology in Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of Intra-abdominal Mass Lesions

Background& Objective: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an easy, rapid, and less hazardous tool to diagnose the intra-abdominal lesions with various imaging modalities adding to its sensitivity and accuracy. However, sometimes it does not yield adequate information for precise diagnosis and the risk of false-negative and indeterminate diagnosi...
